Title: CAMX Award | ShapedTape - A Low Cost Direct Material Replacement for Slit Tape

Description:

Unsurpassed Innovation Award

Company: Century Design Inc

Description:  The CAMX Award winners will be announced during Tuesday's General Session and will present in the theater at 12 pm. All entries will be on display throughout the week in the CAMX Awards Pavilion in the exhibit hall. AFP technology has contributed to significant reductions in the cost of composite parts, however, the high cost of slit tape prevents continued expansion and further cost savings. CDI has developed an innovative complete machine solution for the production of OnDemand "ShapedTape" which is a direct replacement for slit prepreg tapes.  It is the combination of the “point of processing conversion” which provides significant reductions on non-value-added costs, lead-time and material scrap along with the increases in responsiveness and production flexibility which when combined with “ShapedTape” material make this an economic and strategic option.

Collaboration and Partnerships: This technology was developed by CDI and CDI maintains full ownership and responsibility. While we had input from end users and some resin suppliers this technology was developed in house.  This technology was developed by CDI and CDI maintains full ownership and responsibility. Concept and Design: Initial machine development started 6.5 years ago targeted at a research TowPreg line. Upon machine completion and testing, realization was that Towpreg could be rethought of as a Prepreg like process. We developed machine, controls, and the program for making TowPreg similar to processing methodologies and controls used for hotmelt prepreg resulting in controlled engineered material identical to a narrow prepreg format.  The result was a TowPreg material that was more dimensionally stable than the products available today. Upon this realization we decided to invest in further development to see how far we could push the dimensional stability. After a few rounds of redesign and prototyping we were pleased to prove that through this new impregnation process we are able to achieve high tolerance shaped material identical to slit tape but without the shortcomings that come from slitting and at a significant cost savings as this new process collapses the entire prepreg to slit tape process down to a single process that takes places within as little as 10ft.  This new processing technology also allows for inhouse production to be a feasible option for parts makers and allows for significant cost reductions which opens up lower cost point products and markets who have been unable to justify the use of a technical product like slit tape before often compromising for a less effective engineered design.

Additional Information: With the growing and changing composites market, flexibility and control are more important than ever and as most companies have realized in the last few years change is the one constant that we can depend on. CDI has combined their patented “ShapedTape” technology together with their OnDemand Material Solution Line to provide part makers the ability to produce “ShapedTape” in-house. Allowing for significant cost benefits and full control of current and future material needs furthering the potential of AFP and other automated technologies that utilize slit tape today.  With over 60 years in the composites industry and development of one of the first prepreg machines, CDI’s OnDemand “ShapedTape” lines are fully automated, easy to operate, compact, versatile, and quick and easy to clean and set-up allowing for manufacturers to rethink the entire process of the production of composite parts.  OnDemand “ShapedTape” Material is the material solution for the future of AFP. Customized Materials, No Minimums, Always Fresh, and OnDemand.
